In Wasdale the Trust owns England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and deepest lake, Wastwater, which has impressive scree slopes. Almost the whole of the surrounding mountains are NT-owned, including Great Gable and the famous historic wall patterns at the valley head. Lower down the valley is the wooded and tranquil Nether Wasdale Estate.

Over 7,000 hectares (17,000 acres) and 11 farms are protected in neighbouring Eskdale, with extensive areas of fell, 6 farms and Hardknott Roman Fort. In the beautiful Duddon valley the Trust cares for almost 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) and nine farms.
