Kinnaird Head Castle is a radically altered 16th century rectangular four storey keep. It was built in 1570 by Sir Alexander Fraser of Philorth as an occasional residence.
His main residence was Cairnbulg Castle, south of the town. He held it until 1611 when he was to sell it in order to pay debts incurred when he built the town's harbour. It was converted into a lighthouse in 1787 and now forms part of a lighthouse museum which holds the largest and best collection of lighthouse equipment in the UK.
