When Alf Wight died in 1995, Hambleton District Council bought the old surgery and set about painstakingly restoring it into what it is today - The World of James Herriot Centre.

The £1.4 million project includes recreated living quarters for the 40's and 50's and sets of the TV series All Creatures Great and Small. A visible farm featuring the latest in computer wizardry sits alongside displays of veterinary artefacts past and present. And now interactive exhibits examine horse dentistry, as well as the strength needed to calve a cow.

The Council's millenium project explores veterinary science and takes visitors on a journey back to the 1940's. It is a unique tribute to Alf Wight, famous author of the James Herriot novels.
