Dowfold House was originally built for Joseph Pease, the first Quaker MP and local mine owner in 1860. This traditional English house sits on a hill overlooking the small town of Crook, with uninterrupted views across Wear Valley and on to Weardale, yet less than 20 minutes from Durham city centre.

Each of the colour themed rooms are tastefully decorated and well equipped. The rooms are all double glazed and centrally heated for your comfort and they have views overlooking the surrounding countryside. They all have ensuite bathroom and/or shower facilities.

Relax in front of the fire in the guest lounge and select something to read from the library. Stroll around the garden or enjoy a traditional cream tea on the patio or play a round of croquet.

Breakfast is served in the elegant dining room, where you will be amazed by the extensive menu offering anything from a full English to smoked salmon on scrambled eggs or a continental style breakfast.

Special Features
We can offer secure off road parking, garaging if needed, and bicycle storage. We also have pleasant grounds, with croquet laid out and boules available. Or just sit on the patio, drinking in the views (and even opening a bottle, if you wish). The sitting room is also available to guests, to read, watch television, view a video or DVD of your own or from our eclectic (i.e. wierd) selection or play games, as you wish
Local Area
We are just off the A68 which is a major route to Scotland. Newcastle is a 30 minute drive away, while Durham, with its history, its river, its castle and above all its cathedral is less than 20 minutes to the east. Weardale, Teesdale, Tynedale are all nearby, with breathtaking scenery, lovely walks (and drives) and delightful pubs.
Getting There
Please Note that this map SAYS "Hillcrest" as the name of the road. It is WRONG! We rejoice in the address of "Low Jobs Hill", which is what is on the road name plaques. Google know about this (and have, allegedly, corrected it), but it takes years for such changes to filter through the mapping system.
