Not because the Queen has visited, but so named because of its close connexion with the Royal Hotel on the Kyles of Bute, Cafe Royale in Broomhill features the same excellent fresh ingredients and irresistibly simple preparation. Sourcing high-quality raw material is a thankfully popular custom in Scottish restaurants.

Cafe Royale, however, can actually name the people who line-catch the fish or raise the cattle. The restaurant is comfortable and without unnecessary frills, with bright blue frontage and prints of Tighnabruaich on the walls. Parking is easy. Seasonally-changing dishes include starter of cullin skink, main course of scallops (hand-dived by Mary), wrapped in Ayrshire bacon with black pudding and mixed leaves, and sweet of creme brulee with balsamic strawberries.
