A duck of the head and a walk up some plain steel stairs finds you in the two centuries-old world of The Grain Store, an unassuming restaurant set in the rough stone stores above the old shops on one of Edinburgh's most historic streets. Rustic tables and chairs cover the original wood floor, while arched sash windows offer a view over the scenic Old Town. By candlelight it's a deeply romantic setting. Co-owner Carlo Coxon produces solid, unpretentious food at a price to match. Every dish is cooked to order using the best local, seasonal produce: Scottish beef and lamb, market fresh fish and seafood, venison, forest picked wild mushrooms... A deserved favorite of many, and easily one of the best restaurants in the capital.
