Directly off the main road along the Brighton seafront, Preston Street is dominated by restaurants. When in the mood for a traditional Indian, locals step into the smart yet informal Viceroy of India where traditional red carpets, dark velvet banquette seating and hand-printed scenes of ancient Calcutta life are matched with modern white linen-dressed tables and dark wood chairs.

An extensive menu lists several korai, tandoori balti and masala specialties. On week days there's a calm atmosphere when the contented murmur rarely rises above the ethnic background music. Nights bring bit more of a buzz. Diners are a mixture of couples, families and business people. Sit at a window table, if possible.
