The Big Pit National Mining Museum is situated on the outskirts of Blaenafon, which has received World Heritage Status for its vital input during the industrial revolution, helping to transform the landscape, culture and society of not only Wales, but also on a global level.
The Big Pit was a working coalmine until its closure in 1980. Three years later the coalmine was turned in to a museum, to provide visitors with an insight in to the South Wales mining industry. Visitors are taken on underground tours led by ex-miners, who will take you on an informative adventure through the underground roadways, air doors stables and engine houses which have been developed by generations of mineworkers. The museum has a range of new attractions including a multi-media tour of a modern coal mine with a virtual miner, new exhibitions in the Pithead Baths, and Colliery buildings which have only just been opened to the public for the first time.
The Big Pit is an excellent family day out providing visitors with a realistic perception of life as a miner. The museum has an excellent range of facilities to ensure visitors have a great day, including a café, gift shop, baby changing facilities and free car and coach parking.
