In the medieval building known as the Wool House, Southampton Maritime Museum was opened in 1912 and was Southampton's first public museum. The museum contains displays relating to Southampton's history as a trading and passenger port with a collection of large model ships, including a model of the Queen Mary.
The museum has been gifted, or acquired a large number of items relating to the Titanic disaster. One of the first gifts was the Royal Naval Reserve dress sword belonging to Captain Smith of the Titanic, presented by his widow Eleanor on the first anniversary of the disaster.
Other exhibits include displays of letters, telegrams, keys and other personal belongings of crew members as well as displays of original material from Titanic's sister ship.
