Bonsai is a stunning and intimate space - dark wood furniture is squared up against a deep red wall, with a large communal table dominating the centre of the room. Clean and crisp, the high contrast space is distinctly Japanese in feel and very Sydney by design.
The Japanese menu is at times familiar, including a range of sushi, several types of miso, gyoza and teppanyaki. The highlights are the intriguing cuisine crossovers from chef Daud Kendall's varied experience.
Try such intriguing combinations as the swordfish, mashed potato and lotus root mille feuille with red wine jus or the shoyu-braised beef.
To match the food, there is a small but shapely wine list of carefully chosen drops, hot and cold sake and appropriately themed cocktails.
