Carreg Cennen Castle is situated in Carmarthenshire, Wales. The castle is placed on top of a sharp hilltop so it boasts the most spectacular view of the Black Mountain in the western corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park and thus dominates its surroundings. Although the castle has been damaged over the centuries by wars and the elements, it gives you a better insight into the past than most preserved historic sites.
The existing stronghold dates from around 1300 and fell into the hands of the Welsh and English during the medieval period. In 1462 the castle was partially dismantled by 500 men that had picks and crowbars.
The castle was cleverly placed on top the hill as it made it difficult for attackers. The hill is steep and grassy and approach from one direction is impossible as it has a 100mtr cliff. The eagle's nest is interesting as it is above and below ground. There is a passageway cut into the cliff, which leads to a cave. It may have been inhabited in prehistoric times.
