The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway was built in the early part of the 20th century. It opened in 1903, its purpose being to link the rural communities to the market town of Welshpool. After 1931 only freight was carried until it eventually closed in 1956. The railway was reopened by a group of enthusiasts in 1963.
The train starts off at the historic market town of Welshpool. It battles up the steep Golfa Bank and goes along the River Banwy into Llanfair Caereinion where the journey will end. During your journey, you will see some spectacular, picturesque views and there is a chance of seeing wildlife such as hawks, deer and otters. The Austrian coaches have open balconies where you can easily view the beautiful Welsh countryside of the Banwy Valley roll slowly by.
The railway holds special events such as driving experience courses, a W&L Vintage Weekend, which is a weekend celebrating the railway's heritage featuring vintage trains, an intensive service and extra attractions. There is also the Steam Gala, which is a special day for the narrow gauge enthusiast and Santa steam specials in December.
