Tommy and Jeff Morgan who found their way by candlelight and put arrows in the sand to find their way back first explored the caves of Dan-yr-ogof in 1912. Inside they found a haven of stalactites and stalagmites. They could however only reach a certain point inside the mountain before a lake cut them off. Undeterred they returned with coracles which is a traditional one-man boat. They ended up crossing 4 lakes until they came across more passages and chambers but couldn't access them because it was a tight crawl.
This crawl was eventually passed in 1963 by Eileen Davies, a local girl and member of the South Wales Caving Club. She and others have now found over 10 miles of cave and it is believed that there is still much more to discover. The journey through these caves is a truly thrilling experience.
You will find many areas to see there such as the Iron Village, The Cathedral Cave that in 1963 members of the South Wales Caving Club blasted a way through the boulders at the end of the cave and discovered a passage decorated with thousands of delicate cave formations. You will also find the Bone Cave, a museum, a dinosaur exhibition, Barney's Playbarn for kids and many, many more.
