The Portmeirion Hotel was built around 1850 and first described in 1861 as "one of the most picturesque of all the summer residences to be found on the sea-coast of Wales" by Richard Richards. The hotel was listed as a grade II building in 1971 and was the original mansion of Aberla. Clough founded the hotel in 1925 but was faced with dereliction and an overgrown wilderness. He had decided he had to use the house for something and in 1926 he opened it up as an unlicensed hotel.
Clough renovated and added several extensions right up until 1935. Additions continued on this hotel until their destruction in the fore of 1981. Reconstruction began almost straight away and re-opened again in April 1988 and in 1990 was awarded the Good Hotel Guide's Cesar Award for "Brilliant restoration of a great hotel to former glory".
