Conwy castle is in the classic walled town of Conwy, Wales. The castle was constructed by Edward I between 1283 and 1289 as one of the main fortresses in his 'iron ring' of castles to contain the Welsh. The castle is a dark stoned fortress, which has the rare ability to evoke an authentic medieval atmosphere. The castle seems to have the power to cast a spell over the people that visit it making them fully aware that they are in the presence of a fine historic site.
A historian stated that Conwy is the most magnificent of Edward I's Welsh fortresses. It is also relatively straightforward in design compared to other Edwardian castles. Conwy's military strength springs from the rock on which it stands on and seems to grow naturally. The castle has soaring curtain walls and eight huge towers, which give it an intimidating presence.
From the battlements you look out at some breathtaking views of mountains and sea and of the roofless shell of the castle's 125ft Great Hall. You can also really appreciate Conwy's ring of town walls from the battlements.
