May Gibbs was the first to give Australian children a fantasy world of their own. May's story Snugglepot and Cuddlepie was published in 1918, before she moved into Nutcote in 1925. Her bush babies and Bad Banksia men brought, and still bring, a rich fairyland as close as the bush is to their back doors.
Located in Neutral Bay on Sydney Harbour, Nutcote is a beautiful little Mediterranean-style cottage and English garden created by May Gibbs. May Gibbs lived in Nutcote for 44 years, working in her studio to create the comic strips, Bib and Bub and Tiggy Touchwood, and writing and illustrating Scotty in Gumnut Land, Mr and Mrs Bear and Friendsand her last ever publication, Prince Dande Lion.
