The Dean Gallery opened in March 1999, to house the Paolozzi Gift and part of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art's permanent collection, and host exhibitions. Designed by Thomas Hamilton in the 1830s as the Dean Orphan Hospital, its recent conversion into a Gallery was undertaken by the architect Terry Farrell. Situated opposite the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the Dean Gallery displays the world-class holdings of Dada and Surrealist art and work by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi.
The Dean also houses an extensive library and archive of artists' books, catalogues and manuscripts, many of them relating to the Dada and Surrealist movement. Part of the collection is displayed in a specially designed library gallery. There is also a reading room, where works from the library and archive can be consulted by appointment.
Both the Dean Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art can be reached by an attractive riverside walkway following the Water of Leith. Visitors can join the walkway at Stockbridge, near the centre of Edinburgh, or at Roseburn to the west of the City Centre.
