The UK Parliament is one of the oldest representative assemblies in the world, having its origins in the mid-13th Century. The present two-chamber system began in the 14th century.
It is possible for UK residents to take a tour of the houses of parliament either during recess or in session. Pre-booked tours are available during the summer, which are open to residents and visitors. Tours last for 75 minutes and run from Monday to Saturday.
The Houses of Parliament we're originally the Palace of Westminster and still goes by this name today. The oldest part of the Palace still in existence, Westminster Hall, dates from 1097. The palace originally served as a royal residence but no monarch has lived in it since the 16th century. Most of the present structure dates from the 19th century after almost being totally destroyed by fire in 1834.
Steeped in history and providing London with famous icons such as Big Ben. The Houses of Parliament a UNESCO site is truly deserving of being one of the most famous landmarks in Britain.
