A bar in a basement is always able to impart a frisson of intimacy from the first encounter. Descending stairs can suggest being admitted to a well kept secret, one of sophistication and allure. So it is with the Crescent Bar. The steps are lit by tiny purple floor lights leading to no less exciting a figure than Humphrey Bogart, whose elegant photograph ushers one in. Humphrey Bogart and his friends, it should be said, since the walls are festooned with photographs of the Hollywood greats of the 40s-80s and they don't come more sophisticated than that! A long room with subdued lighting leads to a bar at the end and along one side is a series of connected alcoves with low tables and comfy, cushioned sofas some of which are made to fit the corners and are large enough to curl up on for the night: all very intimate. On 2-3 nights of the week a DJ is on hand playing soul, funk and mixed house. Otherwise, background music is there to add to one's pleasure. Nobody leaves the Crescent Bar without having had a very good time and if you want it all to yourself this can be arranged as the entire bar can be available for private hire.
