The Duke of Wellington was originally opened as a library for employees of the gentry of Belgravia. But it was not books but liquid refreshment that was needed, so it soon became a public house.
Located in the heart of Belgravia, the pub has has lots of old prints of the "Iron Duke" around the walls. On display is the "Duke's Mounting Block" a large granite block carved by the Duke's batman and which "Old Nosey" used to mount his horse. The pub is close to Chelsea Royal Hospital where the Duke was laid out before his funeral.
Very popular with the lunchtime office crowd, the pub serves excellent bar meals. In fine weather, the outside tables are often crowded with customers enjoying Belgravia's rarified atmosphere and Shepherd Neame's prize-winng ales & lagers. Buckingham Palace, The Royal Hospital (Chelsea Pensioners), The Duke of York's Barracks, Hyde Park and Kings Road/Sloane Square are all nearby.
