This featured walk will lead you into the heart of the historic Sherwood Forest, with its links to the infamous Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Three and a half miles long, the walk starts at the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre and will take about two hours to complete.
There are some fine examples of stag-headed oaks, many of which are over 500 years old. They provide homes for a wide variety of rare insects that burrow in the dead wood. Keep on this track to the junction, signed to the Major Oak. Contain your enthusiasm to visit the legendary tree at this stage. Ancient, large oaks such as the ones seen here were often thought of as the homes of woodland spirits who in folklore were often represented as the green man.
The Visitor Centre is situated on the B6075 just north of Edwinstowe and is well signed from the A614 Ollerton roundabout. Car parking is £1.50 at weekends, Bank Holidays and school holidays, but the centre is also serviced by buses, including the Sherwood Forester.
