The main part of this Victorian Hotel was originally built in 1862, with the restaurant and garden rooms added much later on. The Royal Sportsman was the main staging post in the area since the Cambrian Railway did not arrive in Porthmadog until 1867.
It was famous for its own liveried carriage and horses, stabled in what is now the garage, taking customers from the Hotel to their destinations. Photos are found in Gelert's bar.
The physical structure of the Hotel was built from local Blaenau Ffestiniog slate, which is still visible from the outside and the many original features, particularly the stone and slate fireplaces in Gelert's Bar and Lorenzo's Coffee Lounge that have now been restored.site
