Until January 27th 2006, Great Dixter House & Gardens was home Christopher Lloyd who died at the age of 84. Mr Lloyd had lived in the house since 1921.The team at Dixter, headed up by Fergus Garrett, head gardener and Christo's closest friend, are greatly saddened by this enormous loss. The team is committed to carrying on Christo's work and keeping Great Dixter and its garden open for the public to enjoy.

Most of the garden design was by Lutyens; it always seems fluid, never stodgy. Thus yew hedges are sometimes curved, making a change from straight lines. He often used tiles in a decorative manor. Lutyens incorporated farm buildings into his design, turning them to other uses, creating some fantastic gardens.

The Great Dixter house is virtually in the state in which it was left at the completion of the restoration in 1911. Despite major alterations made about 1595, since removed, the principal medieval features of the hall have remained relatively intact. It is one of the largest surviving timber framed halls in the country.
