Situated in the heart of Edinburgh, The Real Mary King's Close consists of a number of closes which were originally narrow streets with houses on either side, stretching up to seven storeys high.

Following new research and archaeological evidence, for the first time the real lives of some of the people who lived here have been traced and their stories can now be told. At The Real Mary King's Close you will see an historically accurate interpretation of life in Edinburgh from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries.

You will be guided through the underground closes by one of the characters from the past whose life touched Mary King's Close. Your guide will reveal dramatic episodes and extraordinary apparitions from the past, including ghost stories over 300 years old. The Real Mary King's Close is thought to be one of the most haunted places in Scotland and the true stories will send a shiver down your spine.

Further Information: Tours operate 7 days a week (except Chritmas day) departing every 20 minutes from 10.00am and lasting approximately 1 hour. Pre-booking is essential as each of the tours are limited in places. As the underground site has uneven surfaces and some steep inclines, sturdy footwear is essential. Due to the historical nature of this underground facility access may prove difficult to people with certain disabilities. Many of the spaces throughout the attraction are of a dusty nature and may be uncomfortable for those with breathing difficulties, please phone in advance for clarification.
