Sarehole Mill was built in 1765 and is the only working watermill in Birmingham. It is known that the Mill was an inspiration to J.R.R. Tolkien, who played in the grounds and it is an area mapped on the 'Tolkein Trail.
Sarehole was used to grind corn, but in the industrial revolution it was used for blade grinding and metal rolling as well. It is a fine example of one of more than fifty water mills that existed in Birmingham at one time
The Mill is open to the public from April to October and to school parties throughout the year.
