The walls of the rock shelter have served as canvases for thousands of years, providing windows to a rich spiritual tradition. Paintings such as Namarrgon, the Lightning Man, explore the relationship of the people to their country and beliefs.

There are three main sites at Burrunggui: a rock shelter (Anbangbang shelter); several rock art sites, including the Lightning Man rock art site (Anbangbang gallery); and Gun-warddehwardde lookout. The paintings at the base can be reached by the circular 1.5km Nourlangie Art Site Walk. Wheelchair access is provided to the main art site along a 400 metre paved track.

It's worth climbing to the lookout for sweeping views of the escarpment. During the dry season, park rangers invite you to join them and share their in-depth knowledge of this ancient gallery.
