Bowen is known as the "Mural Capital of the Australia". It has 24 murals sites, most within walking distance of the central business district. twenty of the murals depict Bowen's early history. Eighteen of them were commissioned by the Bowen Shire Festival of Murals Society, a local group dedicated to putting Bowen's history on display.

The Murals have been painted by well known Queensland artists. Two of the murals were painted by local artists, one by art students of the Bowen High school and one by famed artist Ken Done.

This mural was displayed in the United Nations Pavilion at the 1988 Brisbane Expo. It was later donated to Bowen by the artist. The historical murals clearly depict the long history of Bowen. They have been recognised world-wide. The North Australian hotel which holds Bowen's oldest licence and one of the oldest continuance licence in North Queensland has recently revamped its lounge facility.

Further Information
The walls of the room which is now renamed the Sportsman's lounge have been decorated with sporting murals. Well worth popping your head around the door to view the murals. The popularity of the Bowen Murals has lead to the engagement of several artists for more commissions throughout Queensland. Direct contact was made to a member of the murals society and they suggested that a book be purchased so that the enquirer could make their own decision on which artist to engage for the painting of their own mural. Glen Gillard has painted four railway wagons at Clermont depicting murals on sheep, cattle, wheat, cotton and other aspects of life in this thriving district. Francis Rowland (Wregg) has also received commissions from her involvement with the Bowen Murals Society.
