Old Sarum with its huge banks and ditches, lies near Salisbury on the edge of the Wiltshire chalk plains. It is an extraordinary place with an extraordinary history, originally created by the Iron Age people in about 500BC, it was later occupied by the Romans, Saxons and in 1070, William the Conqueror paid off his army here.
Today the remains of the prehistoric fortress, the Norman palace, castle and cathedral, evoke powerful memories of the people associated with this place.
