The Royal Chelsea Hospital cares for veteran soldiers, who are renowned for wearing their distinctive red military uniforms about the hospital and the famous venue for the Chelsea Flower Show. The building was designed by the legendary architect Sir Christopher Wren and has witnessed a great many changes in British political, social and military history.
The building is full of magnificent architecture and art and a number of concerts take place in the grounds throughout October and November each year. The grounds have extensive grass areas with football pitches, tennis, netball courts and sports changing facilities.
There is a small but interesting museum and shop open daily from 10am-12pm and 2.00pm-4.pm (closed Sundays Oct-Mar) composed of artefacts left by deceased in-pensioners and was originally opened in the Great Hall in 1866, with displays of medals, a reconstruction of the wards and the uniforms of veteran soldiers.
Entry to the Royal hospital is free and visitors are able to see the Great Hall, Octagon and Chapel, walk around Figure, College and Light Horse Courts. Conducted tours are available with a Chelsea pensioner guide for a small charge. The South Grounds and Ranelagh Gardens are open daily from 10.00am (2pm on Sundays) but closing times vary throughout the year.
