Manchester Cathedral is a small cathedral by city standards, but it boasts the "widest nave in England", a legacy from the repeated addition of new chapels by local rich familes over the ages that has given the cathedral a slightly higgeldy feel.
Although most of the present construction is Victorian, there have been three churches on the site, dating back to the 9th century; the Saxon Angel Stone dates from 700CE, implying there may have been even earlier use.
The cathedral has a decent visitor centre with a licensed restaurant and a shop.
