Winchester is otherwise known as the cathedral city of Hampshire. You can't go past the centrepiece of this one time capital city, the magnificent, medieval Winchester Cathedral.
True to form, the Normans wasted no time in building a cathedral to stamp their authority on the city in 1079. Interestingly, the Cathedral ended up taking another 300 years to complete, resulting in an outstanding blend of early Norman to Perpendicular styles!
Don't judge a book by its cover; the cathedral doesn't exhibit its true magnificence until you step inside. An immaculately vaulted ceiling and elegant marble columns captivate the viewer, drawing you eye along the 556 foot nave of Europe's longest medieval church.
To name drop, you will also find the tomb of Jane Austen within the Cathedral (she died in the city in 1817).
