16 kilometres south west of Marble Bar, in desolate scrub and spinifex country, visitors can still see the remains of one of the best kept secrets of World War Two, the Corunna Downs Airbase.

Crumbling foundations and half filled post holes are all that is left of the many buildings that once housed the administration, operation and accommodation essential to a bustling airbase.

It was from this empty and almost forgotton ironstone ridge, that Australia and American air force units, most notably the number 25 City of Perth RAAF squadron and 380th USAF Bomber Group, flew out to blast Japanese bases, and harassing enemy shipping vital to Japanese supplies and troop movements, that were threatening Australia from the north.
