Dover Castle is one of the most impressive castles in Britain and dates back to 1066 when an Anglo-Saxon fortress was reinforced by William of Normandy. In the 1180s the Castle was rebuilt at the orders of Henry II when a keep was added. In Napoleonic times a series of secret tunnels were built. These were expanded in WWII and were used to evacuate 338,000 troops from the beaches of Dunkirk under Winston Churchill.
Dover Castle is as fascinating as it is vast so will fill a day out. Explore the restored Saxon Church, discover the remains of the Roman lighthouse dating from AD 50, rumoured to be the oldest standing building in Britain. Henry II's keep has walls as thick as 7m in some places and is worth inspecting. Look around the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment Museum, see the reconstruction and exhibition of Henry VIII's visit in 1539, brave the 1216 siege experience and tour the Secret Wartime Tunnels that for some are the highlight of Dover Castle.
