Cardiff Castle is perched high on top of a defensive mound with turrets and crenellated ramparts, it is easy to get lost in images of archers, invading Normans, sieges and boiling tar. Dating back to the 1st century CE, the castle's 2000 year history spans the Roman and Norman occupations through embellishments and extensions at the hands of the Victorian aristocracy right up the present day.
The castle passed into the hands of the Bute family who restored it to its former glory. The 3rd Marquis, John Bute, who was reputed to be the richest man in the world by 1860's. The Victorians loved a good castle and John was no exception - he created elaborate interiors with sumptuous decoration using stained glass, marble and wood, all of which can be viewed today.
Cardiff Castle grounds are a lovely place for a picnic or stroll - keep an eye out for the peacocks, which roam freely! Refreshments are served in the Tea Rooms.
