Pendennis Castle, just a mile southeast of Falmouth, sits across the harbour mouth from its sister, St Mawes castle. Both Tudor castles formed part of Henry VIII's defensive chain along the south coast against the threat from France and Spain.
The castle is in excellent condition and has lived an active life - it was strengthened during Elizabeth I's reign and again during the Civil War where it was one of the last Royalist bastions to fall; in fact was used right through both the First and Second World Wars and there is plenty of fascinating detail to explore from its centuries of use.
