Further Information
Designated a National Park in 1954, Exmoor lies one third in Devon and two thirds in Somerset, every acre of which is privately owned or belongs to a corporate concern such as the National Trust or the Somerset County Council. Every step taken on the Moor, and there are 600 miles of public footpaths, is at the courtesy of someone.
Further Information
Dunkery Beacon is the highest point on Exmoor rising to 1,706 feet. It was formerly the site of a fire beacon, an early warning system. The area is owned by the National Trust. Views from the top are in all directions with some of the best across the Bristol Channel to Wales and Avonmouth. Red Deer can be seen at times, together with grouse, hawks and falcons.
