The Margate Museum is situated in the historic Old Town Hall in Margate, Kent. The main theme of the museum is the history of Margate from the 18th century to the middle of the 20th century. The museum houses many exhibits relating to the history of Margate and the surrounding area, including the town's background as one of the first seaside resorts.

Original paintings, prints, photographs and memorabilia are used to illustrate this progression. Paddle steamers, bathing machines, Victorian seaside souvenirs and Edwardian bathing costumes all help to give the visitor an insight into those times.

The museum's permanent displays are divided into five themes that are Victorian Police Station and Cells, Margate by the sea, Maritime Margate, Margate at War, and the Magistrates Court. The Museum is ideal for school groups and is open throughout the year.

Groups: Children learn most when they're enjoying themselves, and we want them to grow up appreciating museums. Guides tell them about the man who murdered his mother in a Margate hotel. They can go in to the old police station cells and visit the prisoner. They can take impressions of the town's official seal. They can see the Royal Sea Bathing Hospital's training dolls, recently featured in Stephen Fry's Who Do YouThink You Are? on BBC television. And, perhaps most fun of all, they can dress up in authentic uniform jackets, caps and hats from a wide variety of civilian and military organizations.
Please Note: No toilet facilities, but there are public toilets in the adjacent building. When the Mayor's Parlour is not being used for formal functions, the Mayor may give permission for groups to use the Parlour toilet facilities.
