"Vaulted passageways cut out of solid rock: archways thrown up by craftsman's hands, beautiful in proportion, elegant in form, but supporting nothing. Tunnels formed here - deep pits there."

The Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre provides an insight into the fascinating underground world created by Joseph Williamson in the early 19th Century. Take a guided tour through a section of the network of tunnels and view exhibitions, which depict the life and times of one of Liverpool's most eccentric characters.

See some of the many artefacts which have been found in the network, including ink wells, a child's car, and many bottles. Learn about the Old Corporation stable yard built in 1867 and the continuous campaign to locate, save and develop other tunnels.

Groups
Due to safety procedures, the maximum number per group is 15 individuals, inclusive of teacher/organiser. If you have more than the maximum number of 15, we can provide additional tours as needed, for example, 30 visitors would result in two tours Tour A could begin at 11.20am and Tour B could begin at 12.00pm. Please contact the centre to arrange your visit so we can cater for your individual needs.
Getting There
From M62 Follow the motorway into Liverpool to the motorway end. Then continue straight on, following brown heritage signs for Town Centre/Pier Head attractions and Cathedrals, through Wavertree Retail estate, passing the Botanical Gardens on your left. When the brown signs diverge, follow signs for Cathedrals to the left. Keep to the right hand lane as you bend round past the church, then get into the left hand side past the Bears Paw Public House, and turning to the left just past Archbishop Blanch School. Do not then follow the road as it bends to the right in front of the school, but go straight on into the minor road continuation ahead. This is Smithdown Lane. Continue until you see a large Police Station on the right. The Heritage Centre is on the left just after that.
