The Residency is one of the oldest colonial houses in York, and a classic example of Australian homestead design, with spacious verandahs, high ceilings and the original jarrah floors.
Built in the 1850's, it is well suited to house the extensive displays of artefacts, given to the museum by the descendants of the original settlers of York.
It has the distinction of being the first country museum to be recognised by the Western Australian Museum, and is reputed to be the best country Municipal Museum in the State.
