The two horsemen and their mounts were irreparably damaged during the Suez riots in 1956 and had to be sent to Italy from Port Said to be recast in bronze. Bullet marks on the stonework were patched over but are still visible. It was unveiled on its present site in 1964.
Located at the top of Mount Clarence, this memorial overlooks King George Sound where the first ships to leave Australia sending troops and horses to the First World War departed.
It is a special monument depicting the courageous light horse and his soldier - a bond formed between the two that was hard to break. At the end of the war the horses were unable to return home, so against orders, many soldiers freed or shot their best mates rather than have them remain as slaves in a foreign country.
The views over Albany, Princess Royal Harbour, King George Sound and Middleton Bay are simply superb from this position and shouldn't be missed.
