The Rippon Lea House became the 33rd site included on the prestigious National Heritage List. The listing notes "Rippon Lea is important as a surviving example of a large late nineteenth century private suburban estate consisting of an urban mansion, a large garden, orchard and associated outbuildings (including the stable complex, the lodge, the conservatory and glasshouses, the fernery, the porte-cochere, the 1930s swimming pool, and the 1930s ballroom). The place has integrity as an uncommonly large and intact suburban estate."
The National Trust first opened the property to the public 30 years ago and it continues to be one of the Trust's flagship properties. Major refurbishment has been funded by an endowment fund established by the Andrews Foundation.
To go to Rippon Lea is to see the last of Australia's great privately owned 19th century suburban estates. This mansion, designed and built in 1868 in the Romanesque style, is secreted within a beautifully maintained original Victorian pleasure ground. The gardens are of international significance. Stroll through the grand Victorian Fernery, relax by the lake or climb the tower. Discover the heritage orchard and the 19th century conservatory.
