Pontefract Castle is located in the town of Pontefract in West Yorkshire, situated just 30 minutes from Leeds.
Pontefract Castle was built in the 11th century by Ilbert De Lacy whose family lived in the castle until the start of the following century, when Henry I of England confiscated it during a power struggle. The King's supporters held the castle during three sieges in the English Civil War. The castle was largely demolished, although the remains of the castle and the underground magazine chamber are open to visitors.
Magazine tours are available during the school holidays and summer weekends, and group tours can be arranged by prior appointment. Visitors are able to observe the 11th century cellars of the great hall where weapons were stored from medieval times through to the English Civil War period.
