Hauteville House the home of the famous French romantic writer Victor Hugo, has been preserved exactly as it was, when he lived there in exile until 1870. Hugo is famous worldwide as both a literary and political celebrity, who is most famed for Notre Dame de Paris and Les Miserables.

During his 15 years on the island he wrote some of his most famous works, some of which caused great controversy. Hugo was also a believer in European integration and saw the uniting of all European nations as a reality. As wished, Hugo was buried in a paupers coffin and at least two million people followed his funeral procession.

Hauteville House is open for guided tours throughout the Summer. The property gives an insight into the life of the famous writer. You can admire the lavishly decorated interior and take a step back in time.

The Victor Hugo Trail takes you on a tour of forty selected stops, which allow you to discover, in the company of the poet, the island's heritage, as well as its traditions. References are made to the islands of Herm, Sark and Alderney.
