The Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery is the main headquarters of the museum service, located amid a late 19th century pleasure garden in St Peter Port. The museum was purpose built around an old Victorian bandstand and opened in 1978.
The permanent displays depict the natural and human history of the island and there are artefacts from the Victorian collectors, displayed in a Victorian style gallery. A changing programme of temporary exhibitions are shown in the Brian White Gallery, the Rona Cole Gallery and the Lukis Room.
Occasionally the Guernsey Museums & Galleries 'History In Action' Company enact stories from Guernsey's past. There is also a programme of Concerts on the Terrace, from May to September on Sundays at 3pm. Within the museum there is an audio-visual/lecture theatre.
The works on show in the Rona Cole Gallery are changed regularly and often selected to reflect the themes displayed in the adjacent Exhibition Gallery. The gift shop sells a selection of publications and souvenirs.
