St Mary in the Castle is a Grade II listed concert venue that stands as one of Hastings' finest monuments. The magnificent Georgian church, with its unique circular auditorium, was designed by the famous architect Joseph Kaye in 1823 for the Earl of Chichester. The building was rescued from neglect and renovated in 1997 after which it was opened as a major arts centre. It now includes an impressive theatre space with semi-circular seating for 500 people, a large cinema screen, a meeting room and a new art gallery.
By far the best way to see the building and appreciate its finer points is to take part in a tour with one of our knowledgeable Guides. The first of the tours will take place in September as part of the English Heritage national "Open Days" initiative.
St Mary in the Castle will soon incorporate a new 'Arts Hub' for Hastings within the SoCo Art Gallery at Pelham Place. The Arts Hub will be a focal point for the local arts scene and a source of arts information that can be easily accessed and utilised free of charge by the public.
