Built in 1828 to a design suggested by William Smith, the 'Father of English Geology', The Rotunda Museum is described as the finest surviving purpose-built museum of its age in the country.
The Museum is architecturally and historically of world significance having played an important part in both the formation of museum culture in Britain and the country's role in founding the science of geology.
In May 2006 the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded just under £2m towards the redevelopment of the Rotunda Museum as a centre of geology for the region. The Scarborough Museums trust is now working to raise the matching funding that will ensure this slice of British history marches into the future.
