Charleston was the home and country meeting place for the writers, painters and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group. Inspired by Italian fresco painting and the Post-Impressionists, the artists decorated the walls, doors and furniture at Charleston.
Charleston's walled garden was created by Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, together they transformed vegetable plots and hen runs, which were essential to the household during the First World War.
There is also an exhibition gallery showing a mixture of contemporary and historical shows of fine and decorative art.
