This park contains the largest remaining patch of low, open forest in the south-western central tablelands area. There are three main streams, including the Abercrombie River, and several deep waterholes beneath towering casuarinas.

Fish for trout in the streams, or enjoy swimming and canoeing in the waterholes. Car-based camping is available at Silent Creek, The Sink (Retreat River), The Beach (Abercrombie River) and Bummaroo Ford.

Abercrombie River, Retreat River and Silent Creek are important habitats for platypuses and eastern water rats. Wallaroos, red-necked wallabies, swamp wallabies and eastern grey kangaroos are often seen in the eucalypt forest.
