Is located 25km north-west of Beaufort on the Western Highway. Declared a sanctuary in 1926, the forest's inhabitants include a variety of wildlife, including the exotic sambar deer. Eastern grey kangaroos and koalas can often be seen in their feeding grounds. Patience is needed to sight some of the smaller creatures such as the echidna, brush or ring-tailed possum.

More than 250km of roads run through Mount Cole State Forest. From Mount Cole Road, the main passage way through the forest, fern gullies and rock faces are waiting to be explored. Other scenic drives along Water Race Road and Lower Wimmera Road take you through the pine plantations of the area.
