The RSPB has been involved in the management of the 220 acres of Radipole lake of Weymouth since 1975. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds is the charity that takes action for wild birds and the environment in the United Kingdom. It is the largest conservation charity in Europe.
In 1983 the society also commenced management of Lodmoor reserve, creating what is most likely a unique situation in Weymouth, of having two major reserves within walking-distance of the town centre.
